San Jose Chamber Music Society Presents:

THE MOZART PIANO QUARTET

Mark Gothoni, violin; Hartmut Rohde, viola, Peter Hörr, cello; Paul Rivinius, piano

Program: MOZART Piano Quartet in Eb. K.493; Mélanie BONIS (1858-1937) Piano Quartet #1 in Bb Major, Op.72 (1905); Richard STRAUSS Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op.13 [1885].

Pre-concert talk: Roger Emanuels.

Mozart Piano Quartet, from Berlin, was founded in 1997 to explore music's rhetoric, magical sounds and colors through romantic chamber repertoire. An April 2002 hit, they return bringing our first hearing of the Strausss Quartet and of musically-gifted Parisian romantic impressionist Mélanie [first published as 'Mel'] Bonis - who composed, against family pressures and societal obstacles, a too little known but important oeuvre of some 300 pieces, with abundant harmonic and melodic inspiration. Fanfare Magazine put MPQ's 2005 Srauss CD on its 2006 Want List. 'Wagnerite' Strauss composed his Brahms-like Quartet at age 21 in a brief, intense period of 'Brahms fervor'. The MPQ has been ensemble-in-residence at Festivals in Leipzig. Halle, and now Westfalen, Germany.
